Our 12th Episode of our Performance Concepts Chat is with a veteran of the physical preparation industry — Jorge Carvajal. What started as a conversation about training and athlete preparation soon became a discussion about life and not letting other people define success for you. It’s very easy to get caught up in your work and pretty soon you start believing that your position or title defines who you are. Finding your niche and passions, connecting with people and connecting with yourself in your own way seems to be the overarching philosophy of Coach Carvajal.
Jorge provides a great message to both veteran strength coaches who may be pushing too hard and heading towards burnout, as well as providing a cautionary tale to younger coaches entering the field. It’s not about what superstar you are training or what logo you have on your shirt. It’s about making a valuable contribution to those people under your charge. And, it’s also about asking yourself, “Am I happy with what I am doing and where I’m at?” Coach Carvajal, in all of his surfing wisdom, makes it pretty clear that we should not be afraid to ask ourselves these types of questions. If you don’t like the wave you’re on, another one will come around soon.
Jorge Carvajal can be reached on Twitter via @carvperformance. I truly encourage you to touch base and connect with Coach Carvajal.
