One of the great things about my recent trip to New York City is that I was able to spend time with Drive 495 Founder and Owner, Don Saladino. In observing Don work with clients and staff, I found that he was working with a level of enthusiasm and efficiency that I had not seen previously in either the fitness or sport performance industry. He was able to get a large quantity of quality work accomplished with clients, while making everyone around him feel like they had his attention and support. Every time I ran into Don at his gym, he made me feel like I was one of the most important people in the room, even though the room could be full of hollywood celebrities like Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Liev Shreiber or Billy Crudup — all clients of Don’s — at any given time.
In our podcast chat, I ask Don how he got started in the fitness business and what elements of his own life contributed to his career in the industry. More importantly, we talk about the type of environment he creates at his training facility by how he interacts with his clients, his staff and his social media followers. The environment that Don has cultivated at Drive 495 is team-oriented and collaborative. Don also talks about certain scenarios where individuals did not fit into this environment, and how he dealt with those situations. In many ways, we find out that the business is not just about exercises, sets and reps, but more importantly how you relate to people. The success of your business and career in the fitness and performance industry will depend greatly on the relationships you develop and maintain. Don is living proof of this fact.
